Line editing is the fine-tuning process of taking a raw draft and crafting it into an articulate, readable, beautifully flowing work of art. I will work my magic to make your characters, situations, themes, and details as eloquent and clear as they can be.
For most authors, the muse descends in a violent flurry, spattering creativity across the blank page with little regard for subtlety. Few writers pen a story line-by-line; they work in broad strokes, pouring their imagination into the work and channeling rowdy, cacophonous voices before emerging to survey the vibrant aftermath.
But for better or worse, line-by-line is precisely how a reader will encounter your work. You want every word they pass over to convey your meaning clearly and compellingly.
That's where I come in. I have no interest in changing your voice; whatever you've written came from a unique place, and your story deserves to be told by you. I'm just here to make sure that your readers experience your vision as vividly as it appeared to you.
Among other things, line editing addresses:
- Unclear, awkward, or boring language
- Overused words and phrases
- Run-on sentences
- Redundancies and bloating
The line editing process inevitably takes at least two rounds: one of adjustments, rewrites, and suggestions, and another of copy editing/proofreading to tidy up. My approach involves massaging and polishing, hacking and slashing, nipping and tucking, and leaving copious notes. When I return my first edit to you, you will have a fully transparent window into my process and rationale.
Then it'll be your turn to respond to my edits, either in email, in-doc comment replies, or over a phone/Skype call – whatever suits your fancy. We'll work as one mind to bring your writing to heights you'd never imagined possible.
